Why did Beyoncé write Cowboy Carter? ›

Following this research, Beyoncé conceived Cowboy Carter as a journey through a reinvention of Americana, in which she redefines its boundaries and spotlights overlooked contributions of African-Americans to diverse musical genres, Southern and Western culture, and American history.

Beyoncé's new album, "Cowboy Carter," pays homage to her family names — both the family she was born into, and the one she made with husband Jay-Z. After getting married to her husband, Jay-Z, or Shawn Carter, in 2008, Beyoncé changed her name to Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
